Why Foot Grooming Is Important.

Your feet matter a great deal. If a headache or backache kept returning every day, would you ignore it? Unfortunately, many people treat their feet in such a manner. believing that a little soreness or foot pain every day is "tolerable" or "normal." You might not be aware, though, that a problem with your feet might trigger a more serious issue elsewhere.

Consider all the things you could not do without your feet. Your ability to be active has several advantages, including making it easier to maintain a healthy weight, ensuring good foot and body alignment, reducing your chance of injury, and improving your general well-being.

Diabetes can damage the nerves in your feet and restrict blood flow, making diabetics particularly prone to foot-related problems. By taking good care of your feet, you can prevent many health concerns that, if left untreated, will grow into more serious difficulties. If you maintain it, managing your foot care is easy, and you'll be glad you did.

Easy Ways to Maintain Healthy Feet

When you know what to do, improving your foot care is simple. Here is a quick checklist of things to do to keep your feet happy and healthy:

  • Check your feet every day.
  • Every day, wash and dry your feet.
  • Keep your toenails clean.
  • Wear appropriate shoes.
  • Wear shoes and socks to protect your feet, especially if you're active.

Check And Wash Your Feet Every Day.

Because both of these techniques necessitate paying close attention to your feet, they can be combined. Search for dry skin, cracked skin, blisters, cuts, or any lesions on the top and bottom of your feet. Are there any regions of your foot that are softer or warmer to the touch than others? Additionally, check your feet for corns, blisters, and ingrown toenails. If you find a blister, do not pop it. Put a bandage over it and change your shoes.

When it's time to wash your feet, try to use warm water and gentle soaps. Avoid rubbing your skin dry; this might result in excessive dryness or flaky skin. Instead, pat it dry. After washing your feet, apply a soft lotion to avoid cracking; try to select one that isn't oily. Additionally, if you put on socks straight away, you do not want to put lotion between your toes. Bacteria might be able to hide and proliferate because of the lack of airflow.

Keep Your Toenails Clean.

The care of healthy toenails is a big aspect of foot care. Long toenails can cause pain by rubbing up against the front of your shoes or catching on objects. If you do not regularly trim them, they may also become infected or break. After a bath, when your toenails are soft, is the ideal time to trim them.

To avoid sharp edges that can catch on things, cut straight across and smooth with a nail file. Avoid trimming or squeezing your cuticles. If your toenails are too thick or you can't reach your feet for routine maintenance, make an appointment with a podiatrist so they can trim them and examine your feet. Many patients can get assistance with their feet at home after their first visit.

Protect your feet with shoes and socks, especially, when you are active or standing a lot,

The protection of your feet involves a variety of factors. Here is a list of items to think about both while choosing what to wear over your feet and in your everyday routine.

  • Never go barefoot. Always protect your feet by wearing comfortable shoes, hard-soled slippers or specialty footwear
  • Avoid shoes with high heels and pointed toes. ( They can create “hot spots” and  metatarsalgia)
  • Avoid shoes that expose your toes or heels (such as open-toed shoes or sandals). These types of shoes increase your risk for injury and potential infections
  • Try on new footwear with the type of socks you usually wear. Bring a clean pair of your own socks with you to the store if necessary.
  • Do not wear new shoes for more than an hour or two at a time while you “break them in”
  • Change your socks daily.
  • Look and feel inside your shoes before putting them on to make sure there are no foreign objects or rough areas
  • Avoid tight socks
  • Wear natural-fiber socks (cotton, wool, or a cotton-wool blend). These allow for good airflow and ventilation
  • Wear special shoes, like ones made for plantar fasciitis or heel spurs if your physician recommends them
  • Wear shoes or boots that will protect your feet from various weather conditions (cold, moisture, etc.)

Make sure your shoes fit properly. If you have nerve damage (such as neuropathy) you may not notice that your shoes are too tight. Perform the "footwear test" described below.

Before we get too caught up in specifics of finding a good shoe for your foot type, try this “footwear test” with your current shoe, or try it with a potential purchase at the store:

  1. Without shoes, stand on a piece of paper. Make sure you're standing, not sitting, as your foot takes on a different shape while you're seated.
  2. Trace your feet.  Next, place your shoe on the paper (over the traced outline of your foot) and draw the shoe's sole in outline.
  3. Now compare the two to determine whether the shoe is too short or narrow.

Does it appear like you have a crowded foot? The shoe should be as wide as your foot and at least half an inch longer than your longest toe.

You might want to keep a few things in mind while choosing a new pair of shoes.

It is always best to wear flat, closed-toe shoes because they will reduce the danger of harm to your legs and feet.

You will have a robust shoe that won't chafe with time if it has a stiff material outer sole and a leather upper (without an interior seam).

Normally, you'll want to look for footwear that can provide adequate arch support so that your foot may move naturally without experiencing too much impact.

Find a pair that has room for your feet to move around within lastly. Accordingly, there must be at least half an inch of extra room at the end of your longest toe, and the breadth cannot be too small for your foot, otherwise you risk experiencing a lot of problems.
